This is a poem originally written on my Mama’s birthday last year, thinking this August being my birthday month again and after refusing to email you my depressive ones from last year (oh, you’re in for a ride with this month’s scheduled drafts anyways), I decided to honor my Mama, the woman who carried me for nine months around and raised, loved, and holds my hand throughout twenty-two years now, deserves this spot of being the muse of this month’s selected poem. I have started as well a little method of poetry editing, where I highlight pieces of the poem that can be read as its one poem too. Enjoy!
When’s your birthday? When’s your Mama’s birthday? Do you enjoy birthdays?
fairy’s birthday
the air is getting thick
strawberries so ripe
almost bursting out of independence
out of age, out of time
i’m running no longer
not because of a man
not because of a dream
i’ve stopped running
cause there’s simply only one pace
to live life correctly in
and that’s walking in peace
yes, strut like a confident duck
to your weekend date and kiss
let them tell you that your legs are nice
i think there’s nothing wrong with it
life is troubling me a good deal
worries i carry and i give away
to my mum, i take hers as well
we philosophise in the kitchen
in the last hour of her birthday
talk about the year being tough
and she plays with her hands
like a fairy says the world is on fire
anyways everyone has gone mad
everything has been made for this
we’ve been here before,
we also will make it again
